Knysna has to have one of the most diverse collections of walking and hiking trails to be found in South Africa. We have so many different biomes from which to choose - there is bound to be something for everyone. You can choose from the gentle 3.2km Circles in a Forest walk (ideal for kids and the “not-so-energetic”) to George Peak, a strenuous trek up the highest mountain in the Outeniqua Mountain Range.
Cradock Peak and George Peak are essentially the same hike, George Peak is the most popular, being two hours shorter time-wise and a little easier to climb, an 18km round trip. While Cradock Peak is a bit higher at an hour further up and an hour back down to the saddle below George peak.
In between these two extremes we have Goukamma Nature Reserve - quite simply breathtaking especially in spring with all the flowers and sunbirds in summer!! Goukamma Nature Reserve is run by Cape Nature who do a superb job of maintaining the trails. Canoe trips and a wonderful 9km route in the coastal dunes make this a must see venue!
For forest lovers, my personal favourite is the Elephant Walks at Diepwalle. Lots of history, beautiful forest, enormous Yellowwoods, magnificent tree ferns, and the option of a 6km, 8km, 9km or 15 km combo loop walk, make this a dream destination for forest lovers. Also situated here is the wonderful “Legends of the Forest” museum which is hosted by SANParks. If you’ve never been there, it’s well worth a visit.
Also for the not-so-fit is the “King Edward VII Big Tree”. Experience the splendours of the forest on a wooden board walk of 500m. Nice and short but gives you a good idea of the forest.
Branching out to something a little more adventurous, the Kranshoek walk offers something more arduous. With Fynbos, rocky beaches, a gorge and some spectacular views. Bring some energy as the walk back up the cliffs is not for the fainthearted. There is a short 4km loop or the full 9km loop which is a bit longer and involves some minor scrambling.
Robberg Peninsula is the cherry on top! Surely one of our most wonderful natural assets on the Garden Route. The 11km loop to The Point and back has to rate as my all-time favourite walk. Whales, seals, birds, spectacular views, flowers, sand dunes, the island - a feast of adventure.
